Sound familiar?

Tick what hurts. Most QuickBooks pain comes from the same three workflows done slightly wrong, and I have seen every one of them.

Three things I do, and a long tail of things I can

Remote, one-on-one, on your schedule, evenings and weekends included. Training covers up to two people from the same company at the same rate.

  1. Set up or clean up your books

A chart of accounts built for your business, numbered properly, with tax lines mapped so your accountant's bill shrinks. Items, classes, bank feeds, customer deposits, custom forms with your logo, and the preferences almost nobody turns on.

  2. Teach you to fi$h

My training style is questions, examples of what to do and not do, and homework for next time. The goal is to work myself out of a job except for regular checkups, and to get you counting dollars instead of sheep.

  3. Sell you QuickBooks for less

As a QuickBooks Solution Provider I sell Enterprise at 20% off Intuit's price your first year, QuickBooks Online at 30% off, and up to 50% off moving from desktop to Online Advanced. Delivered by email in 24 to 48 hours.

Also on the chart

What I can't do. Guarantee a fix when the problem is your hardware, your bank, an unsupported operating system, or a program limit. Or help if you are not prepared, so send me your list at least 24 hours ahead. A glass of water helps. I talk a lot.

Washington sales tax and B&O
Import only the codes you need from Washington's 343, track two or more B&O rates, file city and state returns from the program.
Payroll and job costing
ADP, Paychex, or Intuit payroll with direct deposit. Estimates that turn into invoices, profit by customer and job, and payroll tax credits like WOTC.
Conversions from anything
Peachtree, Sage, Xero, Wave, MYOB, FreshBooks, or Online back to desktop. Every QuickBooks version back to Pro 2006 is kept as a bridge.
The apps you already use
Bill.com, QB Time, Avalara, TaxJar, Fishbowl, ShipStation, Expensify, Method CRM, Qbox, and the 14 approved hosting providers. Ask before you buy.
Retail point of sale
Configure QuickBooks Point of Sale, connect it to your financials, and sort out inventory before it sorts you out.
Quicken for the household
Accounts, categories, tags, tax lines that flow into TurboTax, budgets, and the download settings you should never leave at default.

A black leather doctor's bag on the front steps of a Seattle Craftsman house at dusk

Why the name?

Like an old-fashioned doctor, Keith made house calls, white lab coat and black bag included. He came to your office, your kitchen table, or a quiet coffee shop with good Wi-Fi, and left when your books stopped hurting. The bag is retired. The house calls now happen on Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams, on your schedule.

Before the doctor's bag

Keith ran a real company's books before he ever fixed anyone else's. That is why his advice sounds like an operator, not a manual.

  1. University of Iowa

    Bachelor's degree, Dean's List

Followed by two years at Seattle University School of Law, where he was nominated as graduation speaker before, in his words, he escaped.

  2. University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center

    Patient financial and collections representative

Helped patients understand and settle their bills, and wrote off $900,000 of them. First lesson in what numbers mean to the people behind them.

  3. AmeriCorps VISTA, Solid Ground

Volunteer year, then seven years of administrative work

A career temp across Seattle offices, a securities arbitrator, a real estate agent, and an Outward Bound graduate along the way.

  4. Stuart Silk Architects

Operations and office manager, about two and a half years

A nine-time AIA award winner doing about $2 million a year with 15 to 18 staff and 22 to 30% margins. Keith ran the books and payroll, put health insurance in place from each employee's first day, and was invited to speak about QuickBooks and office management at his professional association's national convention.

  5. Dr. Quick Books, Inc.

Advanced Certified since 2011, 1,703 businesses and counting

Taught "Ten Things You Need to Do to Set Up Your Start Up's Books Correctly" at the Renton Almost Free Biz School and accounting fundamentals at the Six Hour Start Up Conference. Invited to teach at Seattle Central College and Bellevue College. Nominated for the City of Seattle Mayor's Small Business Award in 2009.

  6. Still keeping other people's books

    Since 2008 and 2013

President and former Treasurer of the Ravenna Woods condominium association since 2008. Treasurer of the Seattle Community Network Association since 2013.

It's nice not to be perfect. Here is what clients say once the books stop hurting.

Keith is worth his weight in gold.

As owner of an S corp consulting firm, time is precious, so I appreciated how efficiently he got me set up. His training style is asking questions, giving examples of what to do or not do, and handing out homework so you get maximum value for the money spent. It saved many hours preparing taxes and a lot of stress.

Owner, S corporation consulting firm. Started with the three-hour special, then signed up for the unlimited plan.
I was very stressed after nine months of categorizing sales tax incorrectly. Keith met with me over coffee and in 30 minutes I had figured out how to correctly categorize and pay sales and B&O tax in Washington.
Personal trainer, Washington sales tax
Being able to reach him on a Saturday was a life-saver for our business. He answered not just one phone call, but multiple.
Small business after a computer crash, weekend reinstall
In the end, we spent about six hours with Keith and it was worth every penny. When he left, we felt that we were finally on the right track.

What it costs, and what it saves

You can spend twelve unbillable hours learning it yourself, maybe. Or three with me, and spend the other nine making money.

Should you do it yourself? I don't repair my car, sew my own clothes, or fix things in my condo. I hire people who know more than I do and finish faster. Shouldn't you?

ProAdvisors, bookkeepers, and IT consultants: keep 90% of your commissions

If you recommend QuickBooks to clients, join Keith's partnership program. You keep up to 90% of commissions, bounties, credit card residuals, and Enterprise renewals at his tier rate, paid within five business days of Intuit paying him. Email for the details.

He passes on 90% of my commissions instead of 50 to 75% like other resellers, pays within five days, and has handed me Enterprise leads rather than keep them for himself. My sales income has doubled since I started working with him. Kim Beauchamp, Champion Accounting
